Leaders I work with across various lines of business often ask for guidance on what they can do to dramatically improve their company’s education function. Those requests lead to writing a report with two colleagues I’ve grown to cherish as friends, Dan Pontefract and Kerry Brown. Our objective in writing this report was to paint a picture of the possibilities. Not rejiggering the conversation, rather changing the game. The Tin Can API is a new specification for learning technology that makes it possible to collect data about the wide range of experiences a person has online and offline. This API captures data in a consistent format about a person or group’s activities from many technologies, demonstrating some of the analytics capabilities we talk about in the paper, but not to be assumed as the solution to managing the unmanageable.
