When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid. — Audre Lorde

The time may soon come when you're ready to give back. Doing something for others can be a very powerful step toward getting to know yourself and for adding joy and value and a sense of accomplishment to your life. Elaine St. James

Here is a list of different sorts of favorites. My favorite causes.

Locks of Love is a non-profit organization providing specially fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children across the U.S., under age 18, suffering from long-term medical hair loss. The prostheses they provide helps to restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling children to face the world and their peers. In May 2003, I sent 14" of my hair to Locks of Love. Cutting off that much hair was very traumatic but knowing it was going to such a wonderful cause made it much easier. Telephone: 888-896-1588, 561-963-1677. See their website for guidelines and mailing address.

Dress For Success provides business clothes for women entering the workforce without the means to purchase interview attire. Take some time to clean out your closet and donate those old suits to someone who will truly benefit from your efforts. In addition to suits and business dresses, they also take dress shoes, coats, belts, and other accessories appropriate for looking professional.

CARE serves individuals and families in the poorest communities in the world, guided by the aspirations of local communities. I've worked with CARE Academy for several years and they are doing wonderful things.

American Red Cross. Make a habit of giving blood at least every six months. If you have a rare blood type, give more often!
